GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:
Under the direction of the Surgical Research Supervisor, the Surgical Research Technologist is responsible for assisting with pre-operative and surgical care of large laboratory animals. Incumbent also assists with post-operative care and general animal health. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, preparing animals for surgery, maintaining anesthesia throughout cases, cleaning the surgical suite, sterilizing and packing instruments, and maintaining records and supplies.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Assists Veterinarian in administering medications, and in collection of specimens, tissue, and blood for laboratory analysis.
2. Performs animal surgical support for surgical procedures and routine operating functions. Provides pre- and post-operative care, anesthesia monitoring, circulating and scrub nurse responsibilities, and radiology technologist support according to professional standards and the Guide.
3. Maintains supplies and drugs for the operating and animal rooms. Keeps records in accordance with federal regulations.
4. Cleans, sterilizes, and repackages instruments, and cleans surgical suite. Performs preventive maintenance on equipment in the surgical suites.
5. Keeps good records, maintains laboratory research notebooks, and demonstrates good time-management skills.
6. Works well in team-effort situations and independently with minimal supervision.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Associates or Bachelors Degree in Veterinary Science, Animal Science, or related field required
Minimum of one year operating room experience, including large or small animal anesthesia, required
AAALAS certification at LAT or LATg preferred
SKILLS/ ABILITIES/ COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:
Proficiency in English (oral and written) is required.
Strong math and computer skills are essential.
Lifting minimum of 50 pounds

Dependability and excellent work habits
Flexibility in work hours
Ability to work alongside others with diverse backgrounds and personalities
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work involves the use of radioactive isotopes and minimally biohazardous materials (BL2 level). Work with these agents will be performed under strict safety guidelines.
