TECHNOLOGIST, MEDICAL LAB, per diem (generalist)

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Preparation of specimens

Receives patient specimens, such as urine, blood, spinal fluid, and gastric juices, or collects blood specimens directly from patients. Centrifuges specimen to separate cells and sediment from serum or supernatant fluids.

Follows standard precautions when handling any body fluids or any items, which may be contaminated with body fluids.



Performance of Tests

1. Performs such tests as red and white blood cell counts, platelet counts, differential cell counts, reticulocyte counts, determinations of sedimentation rate, Coagulation, and routine urinalysis examination using specialized laboratory equipment, such as automated hematology analyzers, coagulation analyzer, automated urine analyzer and sedimentation rate equipment. Consults with the Director of Clinical Laboratories or Senior Hematology technologist regarding difficult analyses or abnormal findings.



2. Runs the automated hematology analyzer to determine the WBC, RBC, Hgb, Hct, Indices, or platelet counts in the blood. Stains blood smears to distinguish between various types of cells.

3. Performs Prothrombin time (PT) and activated partial thromboplastin time (PTT) measured in automated coagulation analyzer. Records the physical and chemical urine chemical analysis from the Clinitek analyzer. Read microscopic urine sediments after centrifugations.



4. May prepare solutions and reagents used in conducting tests/examination e.g. reconstitution of controls and reagents.

5. Is able to utilize the Laboratory Information System to manage the workflow of specimens throughout the Hematology laboratory.

6. Is able to operate, maintain and troubleshoot the automated Hematology, Coagulation and Urine analyzers located in the Laboratory,

7. Is able to perform any manual procedures as required by the laboratory protocol.

Quality Control procedures and instrument checks

1. Calibrates and performs Quality Control in accordance with the established laboratory protocol.

2. Maintains records of all calibrations, Quality Control, maintenance, temperatures, etc. for all instruments, refrigerators, etc.

Other duties

1. Alternates with other Lab staff, helps in the other sections of the Labs -should a need be called for by the Director of the /clinical Labs (due to illness or absences of staff of affected Lab.) Rotates in areas only where properly trained as deemed by the Director of Clinical Lab/Senior Technologist.

2. Assists in maintaining and ordering supplies as deemed necessary by the Senior Technologist.



Phlebotomy duties

1. Collects adequate and correct blood specimens by venipuncture or microtechnique on adults, children and infants.

2. Follows departmental policies detailed in the Lab Assistant/Phlebotomy job description to correctly identify the patient before any blood specimen is drawn and to correctly label all specimens drawn in the presence of the patient.

3. At all times shows concern for and understanding of the patient and promotes the comfort and will-being of the patient as much as possible while performing collecting duties. Patience and persistence are needed when dealing with patients from whom blood specimens are difficult to obtain.

4. The staff member must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his or her assigned unit. He or she must be able to assess the patients status in order to identify each patients age specific needs and provide the care needed by the pediatric, adult, and/or geriatric patient group.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelors degree in any Biological Sciences, chemistry and mathematics, plus one year of actual hospital
