Job Description

The MTI reports to the Laboratory Supervisor. MTI responsibilities encompass the performance of laboratory testing on specimens to provide vital information to medical staff for diagnostic or interpretive purposes. The MTI, after being deemed competent to perform tests, is responsible for following established policies and procedures. The MTI operates and maintains various analyzers and performs testing in areas that may include Chemistry, Hematology, Urinalysis, Serology and Microbiology. The MTI is expected to make sound decisions regarding the test results he/she releases, decisions based on quality of sample, quality control of instruments and kits, and the validity of the result. The MTI is expected to maintain competency in testing and to keep current with mandatory annual training as well as continuing education. The MTI will have a variety of direct patient contact duties such as; drawing blood via venipuncture or capillary stick, obtaining urine, sputum and stool samples for various test procedures, and performing EKGs as needed. The MTI may also perform a variety of clerical duties including use of LIS, for processing and accessioning, faxing for compliance issues, packaging specimens for transport, receiving specimens for testing, and mailing lab reports as appropriate.

Responsibilities:

Gains experience and develops working knowledge by performing routine and complex procedures utilizing complex instrumentation and manual methods

Responsible for the accuracy, interpretation and reporting of results

Performs and keeps accurate records of equipment maintenance and quality control

Refers problems and unusual results to appropriate personnel

Performs clerical and support services as needed, responds to customer needs and requests

Effectively performs adult and pediatric EKGs, venipuncture and capillary techniques as needed

Participates in proficiency testing of unknown specimens

Participates in annual mandatory training, and understands standard safety and infection control procedures including Standard Precautions

Participates in internal and external continuing education programs related to laboratory medicine

Must be able to communicate well in English, as he/she is expected to telephone critical values and lab results to ordering Provider and/or care unit personnel via the use of the LIS, and to answer phones

Requirements:

Bachelors Degree in Medical Technology preferred and certified

OR

BS or BA in Science from an accredited college; and

Certification Eligible based on one year work experience plus degree

OR

Certification eligible CLT at MGH with one year of performance evaluations which meet or exceed expectations and

Ten hours of documented continuing education in previous year within division, hospital or external programs

Skills:

All of the skills and abilities required for Clinical Laboratory Technologist (CLT)

Customer service skills and the ability to provide compassionate care to patients of all age groups served

AND

High level of analytical ability and judgement

Good understanding of department policies and procedures, test principles and equipment operation

Ability to work independently on standard procedures and assignments

High level of professionalism

Ability to participate as requested in performance improvement, work re-design and divisional development projects

The MGH HealthCare Center Laboratories are a small multi-disciplinary Core clinical laboratory which also includes phlebotomy and EKG services for its patients. The HealthCare Center Laboratories have a high patient volume. Laboratory staff will interact with the patients served as well as the patients care providers on a daily basis, as they are the direct customers
