General Overview
Under the general supervision and following specific instructions and procedures, receives soiled, used and/or contaminated equipment and supplies from the operating rooms, patient care units, Anesthesia, Radiology, Satellite health centers. Disassembles, inspects, cleans and sorts contaminated patient care equipment, OR equipment, & OB equipment. Reassembles equipment, prepares patient care instrumentation kits, OB instrumentation kits, Radiology procedural equipment, Instrumentation kits, Respiratory therapy equipment, Anesthesia breathing equipment an other patient care equipment and supplies. Assists in maintaining inventory levels and fills requisition from in house hospital units for supplies. Operates steam/ethylene oxide sterilizers. Documentation of all sterilizer parameters (chemical) biological indicators and Bowie Dick tests. Operates mechanical aerators, dryers, mechanical sanitizers, ultrasonic cleaners, and washer/sterilizer and heat sealers. Assemble OB instrumentation kits, re-stock OB operating rooms, with instrumentation kits, and sterile instruments. Stock all rooms in the main OR with sterile linen packs by using PDT hand held computer, light handles and metal ware, clean all flash sterilizers on Weekends and document. Stock SDSU with sterile linen packs and metal ware, clean all flash sterilizers on Thursday and document.
Responsibilities
Receives soiled, used and/or contaminated equipment, surgical instruments and supplies from patient care units and specialized areas; disassembles and inspects the equipment and instruments, setting aside rejects; prepares items for cleaning and processing.
Operates and maintains steam and ethylene oxide sterilizers and other mechanical equipment such as mechanical aerators, dryers, mechanical sanitizers, ultrasonic cleaner, and heat sealers, washer/decontaminator & cart washer. Daily monitors all gas sterilizers and documents all chemical/biological/Bowie Dick tests
Mixes special detergent solution according to standard procedures for hand cleaning, ultrasonic/mechanical sanitizing, and lubricating instruments. Cleans soiled metal, glassware, latex free tubing and plastic. Some equipment is hand cleaned, ultrasonically cleaned, and then cleaned by decontaminator washer or mechanical washer. After cleaning, all equipment is placed in dryer cabinets for drying process.
Cleans used articles which have been returned from patient areas and specialized areas by washing and drying them in accordance with established SPD procedures.
Performs routine preventive maintenance such as lubricating sterilizer doors. Mechanical sanitizer doors and cleaning strainers on sterilizers and mechanical sanitizer.
Set up technical equipment, such as OB instrumentation kits, surgical instruments, patient care instrumentation kits, and instruments.
Wraps, heat-seals, labels equipment, instruments and materials in preparations for sterilization.
May handle requisitions or telephone inquiries for supplies and requesting advice on materials availability/ordering procedures.
Fills requisitions for supplies and equipment for patient care area units and specialized areas.
Unload pallets from Owens & Minor, Opens cartons (corridors), removes materials and stocks shelves with bulk supplies in SPD. Reports out of stock/deficient quantity/quality of supplies to supervisor. Replenishes stock in assembly area from bulk storage, place order with supervisor to request inventory for replenishment.
Maintain a patient charge system so all charged items are documented on the patient charge form.
Delivers sterile supplies to units/respiratory therapy/radiology areas, etc.
Cleans work areas by wiping w/detergent and antibacterial agent daily.
