Description: Responsibilities
GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT
Following established procedures and policies, performs various analysis on body fluids using complex instrumentation and/or standard manual methods. Possesses and maintains a professional level of knowledge necessary to assure accurate test results. Is responsible for the supervision of an assigned workstation under the direction of the Supervisor and/or Technical Director.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Performs CBCs, routine coagulation testing, body fluid analysis, urinalysis, and other miscellaneous tests using complex analytical procedures and instruments and/or established manual methods.
2. Performs microscopic examination of peripheral blood smears, urine sediments, and other body fluids.
3. Reviews test results for accuracy. Verifies results according to established protocols and enter results into patient files.
4. If scheduled for day shift, rotates through at least one of three specialty areas (Special Hematology, Special Coagulation, and Flow Cytometry), performing complex analytical procedures using automated instruments and/or established manual method.
5. Assists Supervisor in the overall operation of the shift. Troubleshoots and resolves problems with assistance of Supervisors and/or Technical Director.
6. Assumes supervisory responsibilities on weekends, holidays, and in the absence of supervisor. Assumes Senior Technologist responsibilities for specialty areas in absence of Senior Technologist responsible for specialty area.
7. Performs and documents routine and preventative maintenance on laboratory equipment and instrumentation to assure reliability and accuracy in reporting test results. Trains and supervisors others in performing maintenance procedures.
8. Performs and documents quality control testing. Assists supervisor in establishing quality control assay values and standard deviations according to established protocols. Maintains accurate quality control records.
9. Compiles with all technical standards and policies established by the Technical Director.
10. Responsible for training new staff, clinical students, and clinical pathology residents.
11. Participates in proficiency testing as necessary.
12. Participates in internal and external continuing education programs, and keeps current regarding developments in technical instrumentation and analytical techniques in Hematology.
13. Participates in research, development and implementation of laboratory procedures as requested. Makes recommendations as needed.
14. Adheres to all established safety and infection control policies. Follows all OSHA guidelines.
15. Follows all National Patient Safety Goals as developed by JCAHO
16. Monitors inventory of supplies for assigned area.
17. Recommends and participates in quality assurance and quality improvement projects.
18. Performs clerical support and other duties as required.
Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS
1. Bachelors Degree in Medical Technology, or equivalent, from an accredited college or university.
Or
Bachelors degree in a chemical, physical, or biological science from an accredited college or university and 2 years training/experience in high complexity testing in the respective specialty.

Other qualifications as described in the Federal Register, 42 CFR, Subpart M 493.1403-1495
2. MT (ASCP) certification or equivalent is preferred.
3. Three years of laboratory experience preferred.

1. Must have a high level of analytical and technical ability to operate complex laboratory equipment, maintain their performance, and resolve technical equipment problems.
