A RESEARCH TECHNICIAN position in the functional Alzheimer's Disease group is available in Tanzi laboratory at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School. Working independently, under the direction of Dr. Can Zhang heading up in Dr. Rudolph Tanzis laboratory, this candidate will focus on the characterization of the mechanistic causes of Alzheimers disease, with the ultimate goal of identifying novel therapeutic strategies for AD and intervening targets for aging. This candidate will work together with other laboratory members to carry out experiments that functionally identify and characterize genes that confer increased risk of Alzheimers disease. Specifically the experiments will focus on elucidating the mechanism of APP metabolism alteration on the cellular and molecular levels using cell and animal-based models. In addition, this candidate will investigate novel pharmacological agents structurally related to curcumin (diferulomethane) which modulate the processing of APP and the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease. This candidate is expected to be highly motivated, enthusiastic and organized. Major duties:
Executes protocols of routine and non-routine experiments
Assists PI with determining the most suitable methodology
Performs basic design and modification of protocols
Sets up, prepares and executes both routine and non-routine experiments
Calculates, transcribes, analyzes data, and interprets results
Prepares lab reagents, chemicals, instruments and equipment, and orders common laboratory reagents and general maintenance of the laboratory
Participates in the design of experiments or field work
Organizes and summarizes acquired data, using scientific and statistical techniques, and then presents in the format of graphs, charts, tables, illustrations and slides through PPT, EXCEL and /or WORD.
Maintains and updates files, databases, records, and/or other documents
Precisely organizes and accurately maintains written records of experimental procedures including Lab notebook
Organizes and/or drafts material for the preparation of papers, manuscripts, or other documents resulting from data generated in research projects for publication and/or presentation
Prepares and presents reports to PI
Participates in upkeep of lab, performs basic maintenance on laboratory equipment and reports equipment requiring advanced repair.
Qualifications
Minimum of a Bachelors degree in Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, or related field required
Minimum of 1 year of directly related experience involving neuro-degeneration and Alzheimer's disease ; More than 1 year desirable. Preferably in the context of an independent project showing skills in critical thinking and data analyzing
Expertise in molecular biology: polymerase chain reaction; transformation; DNA/RNA/protein extraction and preparation; agorose electrophoresis; Western blotting analysis; , fluorescence microscopy; and ELISA
Expertise in cellular biology work: maintenance of cell lines; and construction of new cell lines with specific antibiotic resistance
Excellent communication skills and the ability to interact professionally with PI and colleagues
Excellent critical thinking skills and attention to detail with the ability to resolve technical problems
Ability to work independently and as a team member
