General Overview

The Rivera Lab at MGH Cancer Center is accepting applications for one (potentially two) Research Technician Positions for a translational research project in cancer diagnostics. The project is an application of a novel RNA based cancer marker called satellites on clinical samples. The results of this work were recently published in the journal Science. An initial analysis of multiple cancer types will be pursued, but initial testing will be done in gastrointestinal malignancies including pancreatic and esophageal cancer. The Rivera lab is focused on developing this assay for clinical application as well as other RNA markers relevant to human cancer. The technology used for this assay is RNA in situ hybridization (ISH) based on Affymetrix Quantigene technology.

Responsibilities

As a member of the team, the research technician is expected to use and optimize existing protocols for use in clinical specimens. The technician will be asked to test new approaches, address technical problems, present results to the group, design follow-up experiments, and maintain well-documented lab records. In addition, the technician will be integrated into the clinical work flow at the MGH pathology department under the supervision of Dr. Vikram Deshpande. The technician will be responsible for assembling clinical specimens and maintaining a database of de-identified clinical material for testing using the satellite RNA-ISH marker.

Qualifications

College background in molecular biology, genetics, biochemistry, or cell biology is required.

Bachelors degree in biology or a related field is required.

Laboratory experience in addition to classwork is preferred.
