RESEARCH TECHNICIAN IDescription: General Overview
The Research Technician I is a full-time position that serves to assist staff Scientists in Dr. Emmanuel Zorns research laboratory. Primary responsibilities are to learn to perform experiments for research projects under supervision of the project head and the PI of the laboratory. This includes collection of and accurate recording of procedures and results, maintenance of databases used in the lab, ordering necessary reagents to conduct experiments, and participation in joint upkeep of the lab.
Responsibilities
Organizes and accurately maintains written records of experimental procedures and data generated. Reports information to PI and/or senior research personnel.
Collects and records study data. Synthesizes and interprets information obtained from graphs, charts, laboratory experiments, statistical summaries and other data collection methods in order to develop new investigative techniques and/or to determine the most appropriate direction of research. Synthesis may involve use of computer programs as well as data entry into databases.
Carries out a wide range of basic and moderately to complex lab techniques such as, but not limited to, chromatography, electrophoreses, histology, histochemistry, and cell culture work. Under direction of supervisor, modifies techniques as necessary to meet research and/or experimental needs.
Operates and maintains moderate to complex lab equipment such as spectrophotometer, scintillation center, ultra-centrifuges, flow cytometer and other scientific equipment related to research activity.
Has responsibility for ordering common laboratory reagents and providing general maintenance of the laboratory including preparation of basic solutions and reagents.
Participates in and may present data at weekly lab meetings and journal clubs and assists in preparation of research data for presentation or publication by others.
Participates in the upkeep of the lab; this includes keeping both direct and general work spaces clean and tidy and helping maintain an overall safe and clean environment. May perform, or refer as needed, routine maintenance of lab equipment to include cleaning and replacing of parts. Report equipment malfunctions and needs to management.
Learns new techniques as required for projects. Discusses any observed experimental conditions that may need to be modified with PI and/or Senior personnel.
Skills/Abilities/Competencies
Must be self-motivated and able to work independently under close supervision
Good verbal, written, and organizational skills
Proficiency in Word, Power point, Excel, and Internet searches preferred
Must be reliable, pay attention to details and be capable of working independently to perform basic laboratory procedures
Must have a basic understanding of the theory behind the tests and procedures and work well as part of a team
Is knowledgeable and compliant in all hospital, State and Federal regulatory requirements, including hospital policy and procedures (where applicable to the performance of the job), Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO), and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA).
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree.
Working Environment
Duties will be performed in a research laboratory
Work will be conducted over a forty-hour workweek, but actual schedule can be flexible
