GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:
Under the general supervision of the Clinical Supervisor, Blood Donor Services Unit, the technician performs donor registration and screening, whole blood collection, preparation of components from collected whole blood, and automated platelet and red blood cell apheresis collections procedures. Possesses accuracy in spelling and punctuation and is proficient in the use of computer systems. Is able to monitor vital signs and manage donor reactions.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Performs any or all facets of the Donor Center donor processes, as needed and as training progresses:
Reception, Registration, and Donor Screening. Accuracy in spelling and punctuation for donor data entry and documentation is imperative, as is competency in use of computer systems. Donor screening with use of donor guideline manuals and reference materials. Efficient and accurate donation entries performed at intervals throughout the day
Performs whole blood phlebotomy with accurate selection of veins, use of aseptic technique and proper arm preparation, accurate venipuncture, and the insertion of angiosets for pheresis procedures, and the use of automated blood collection equipment.
Accurately labels specimens, and WB units. Accurately completes all records. Performs post-collection handling of products according to FDA guidelines.
Recognizes adverse reactions and assists in their management. Is Basic CPR certified. Provides comfort, support, and education to the donors, their families and the general public.
Prepares components in component prep lab through centrifugation, separation, mixing, labeling, and with accurate verification of records and data entry into computer system.
Performs automated pheresis procedures, using the Amicus and Cobe separators, and/or the Alyx double red cell separator. Has a clear understanding of the donor risks involved, and can manage donor reactions during and following pheresis donations.
Utilizes resources efficiently to facilitate optimal donor care. Assists in the management of supplies and equipment. Requires occasional lifting of objects weighing no more than 25lbs.
Maintains equipments and stocks supplies both in-house and on the buses.
Accurately and legibly records results of all procedures performed. Performs appropriate Quality Control and Preventive Maintenance procedures, Understands current Good Manufacturing Practices.
Uses professional knowledge and judgment to manage medical emergencies in conjunction with BTS physicians, nurses and other donor center staff.
Maintains complete confidentiality of patient and donor information and records, as outlined by the MGH Privacy/Confidentiality/HIPPA policies.
Completes required annual training.
Knows and adheres to safety precaution techniques and Universal Precautions
QUALIFICATIONS:
Must be a High School Graduate.
Must read, write and comprehend English sufficiently well to follow procedures, and to communicate with donors and families, laboratory and hospital staff.
Proficiency using computers (email, word processing, data entry) and good keyboarding skills.
Accuracy in spelling and punctuation imperative for donor data entry into computer
Medical Assistant certificate or phlebotomy training desired. CPR certificate a plus. Previous patient care experience or experience within a patient care setting preferred. National Phlebotomy Certification desired.
Should have understanding of Basic Anatomy and Physiology. .
Should have knowledge of Standard Safety and Infection Control procedures including Standard Precautions.
Knowledge of Good Manufacturing Practices and Techniques desired.
Proficiency in Spanish and other languages desired. Qualifications:
