Description:
General Overview

A Critical Care Nurse Practitioner (CCNP) is a registered nurse with graduate preparation in advanced practice registered nursing (APRN), who provides direct care to individuals and/or groups in critical care settings. Under the administrative direction of the Medical Director and Nursing Director of the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), the CCNP will provide clinical management to patients admitted to the PACU. Management includes, but is not limited to critical care interventions, intensive care monitoring, diagnosing and prescribing treatments, therapeutics, and medications, coordinating referrals and discharging patients from the PACU. In collaboration with a multidisciplinary care team, (s)he is responsible for establishing, implementing and evaluating the ICU course of treatment and the coordination and communication of the treatment plan. The CCNP will have a key role in patient and family teaching, while promoting competent, compassionate nursing care for patients and families. S(he) will serve as a role model for professional nursing practice.

Responsibilities

1. Provide direct, comprehensive patient care to critically ill patients in ICU setting.

1.1 Complete initial patient evaluations including: history and physical, necessary diagnostic labs and testing orders, thorough documentation of findings.

1.2 Assess patients using physically and technologically derived data, including the evaluation of diagnostic test results. Order medical or surgical consultations as needed.

1.3 Utilize advanced practice registered nursing knowledge to identify, prevent or solve complex and/or recurring patient care problems.

1.4 Collaborates with nurse directors, clinical nurse specialist, nurses, medical and surgical staff, and others as appropriate to the situation to plan, implement and evaluate pertinent change in practice and health care delivery.

1.5 Manages patients, independently and in collaboration with the multidisciplinary care team, to enhance continuity of care.

1.6 Performs various aspects of patient care pursuant to practice guidelines developed in collaboration with the supervising physician.

1.7 Facilitates patient movement through the system and efficient use of resources through interdepartmental collaboration.

1.8 Document and provide ongoing communication to patients, families and referring physicians on developments in the intensive care process.

1.9 Applies ethical principles in caring for acute, critical, and complex chronic patients.

1.10 Serves as patient/family advocate and facilitates ethical decision making.

2. Provide consultation to clinical and administrative members of the PACU team.

2.1 Acts as a primary resource and consultant to members of the multidisciplinary team regarding patient care.

2.2 Integrates research to promote evidence-based practice.

2.3 Serves on appropriate departmental and hospital committees.

2.3 Identifies system-wide factors contributing to undesirable outcomes, such as complications, increased length of stay and over utilization of services.

2.4 Leads or Participates in medical, surgical and anesthesia team rounds.

Qualifications

- Current active licensure in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as a Registered Nurse.

- Current authorization to practice as a nurse practitioner from the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing and one of the following:

1) Certification from a national certifying body acceptable to the Board of Registration in Nursing as a Critical Care Nurse Practitioner with ICU experience either as an NP or RN of no less than 3 years; or

2) Certification from a national certifying body acceptable to the Board of Registration in Nursing as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner with ICU experience either as an NP or RN of
