Neurophysiology Technologist

Description:
Under direct supervision of a neurophysiology specialist, the incumbent performs standard electroencephalographic (EEG) examinations on both outpatients and inpatients. Responsibilities include the preparation of cleaning solutions, preparation of the patient, conduction of various routine electroencephalographic tests (includes routine awake and sleep EEGs as well as tests specific to the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit) and the collection of information pertinent to the interpretation of the tests. May perform clerical/administrative duties as required.


PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Greets patients and explains the examination procedures to the patient and/or family. May perform the tests in the laboratory, at the patient bedside, in an intensive care unit or in the emergency room. Responsible for maintaining procedure rooms including changing beds, room tidiness and assisting patients with using the bathroom as necessary.

Selects predetermined standard and special electrode combinations (montages) made necessary by the case under study. May need to add additional electrodes as clinically indicated.

Measures patientâ?Ts head prior to placement of monitoring equipment. Calibrates and operates the EEG equipment to record routine EEG procedures.

In the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit, attaches and or re-attaches electrodes on predetermined measured positions on the patientâ?Ts head following written guidelines or directions of the neurophysiology specialist or chief technologist.

Monitors recording as it is in progress and defines abnormal from normal activity based on the patientâ?Ts history and clinical condition. Monitors on the same apparatus other variables such as EKG, respirations, etc. when indicated by the circumstances at the EEG recording.

Obtains standard recordings, recognizes artifacts and takes appropriate steps to eliminate them. Uses activating procedures such as hyperventilation, photic stimulation and sleep.
Abstracts relevant information from the patientâ?Ts clinical record and obtains additional information from a patient interview. Writes a technical report in patient chart (inpatient) under supervision that serves as a preliminary report to the patientâ?Ts physicians. Retrieves previous records for comparison.

Enters patient data into a reporting system computer terminal and retrieves and reviews previous tests/recordings as needed. Completes report and billing information accurately in the reporting/billing system. Stores data appropriately.

Maintains, troubleshoots, cleans and performs minor repairs on the EEG equipment; reports need for major repairs to supervisor.

Helps maintain the laboratory inventory. Prepares electrodes, instruments, etc. for sterilization. Keeps laboratory in a neat and orderly fashion.

Attends departmental staff and in-service meetings as required.

Must be available to work on-call, off shift and weekends.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Ambulatory inpatients and outpatients are performed in the EEG laboratory. Bedside tests are performed on non-ambulatory and ICU patients on the floors.
Qualifications:
Graduation from a certified hospital program or Associates Degree program.

SKILLS/ ABILITIES/ COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:
Ability to perform routine/sleep EEGs and Epilepsy monitoring on patients of all ages.
