Job Description Primary Duties and Responsibilities:



1. Medical Technologists perform start-up, maintenance, and troubleshooting procedures on instruments and laboratory equipment per established laboratory protocols. They perform and evaluate QC and calibration, and data entry and assessment.

2. Medical Technologists follow Standard Operation Procedures for all specimen handling and testing, meeting all turn around time expectations. Specimen Testing procedures include, but are not limited to:

a. Preparing specimens for examination

b. Performing complex chemical, biological, hematological, immunologic, microscopic, and bacteriological tests.

c. Using automated equipment and instruments capable of performing tests simultaneously

d. Analyzing samples for chemical content or other reaction

e. Testing for drug levels in the blood

f. Microscopically examining blood and other fluids for abnormal cells and counting cells

g. Making cultures of body fluids and tissue samples to determine the presence of bacteria, fungi, parasites, and other organisms

h. Type and crossmatch blood samples for transfusions

i. Evaluating test results, entering results into the LIS and reporting results to clinicians

j. Ensuring accuracy of test results

3. Medical Technologists follow established laboratory policies whenever test systems are not within established levels of performance. They seek assistance after attempting to resolve problem situations.

4. Medical Technologists keep current with developments in laboratory medicine by mandatory and voluntary continuing education, competency testing and Quality Assurance. They also participate in the running and resulting of mandated Proficiency Testing Samples.

5. Medical Technologists participates in the evaluation of new methods, procedures and instruments. They write technical Standard Operating Procedures and maintain them for accuracy, and regulatory compliance under the direction of the Medical Technologist Leader, Clinical Manager, and Pathologist. They also participate in training of other staff members.

6. Medical Technologists maintain adequate supplies for all work areas. They assist with inventory assessment and ensure there are sufficient reagents and supplies to complete patient testing.

7. Medical Technologists follow all Medical Center and department policies and procedures for safety and universal precautions.

8. Medical Technologists follow all Medical Center and department policies for Critical Values.
Qualifications
Education: BS in Medical Laboratory Science including successful completion of clinical internship or Baccalaureate in Biology or Chemistry with course work and/or appropriate to the laboratory guidelines of CLIA '88.
Licenses/certifications: MT(ASCP), CLS(NCA) or equivalent certification.
Skills: Must have analytical abilities necessary to perform high, moderate, and waived complexity test procedures with a high degree of accuracy and an understanding of their relevance to specific patient conditions. Judgment decisions are required especially during technically difficult and emergency situations. Must realize the importance and consequences of reported laboratory data and resulting interventions. Must have the ability to read, comprehend, and follow written procedures and verbal instructions. Must have the ability to perform arithmetic, algebraic and statistical calculations. Must have interpersonal and communications skills necessary to work effectively with colleagues, patient care providers, and patients. Must be able to achieve expected turn around time for reporting patient test results and manage the psychological stress encountered in meeting these requirements. To accommodate the need of the lab, must demonstrate flexibility with regard to work assignments, workflow, and schedule.
Hours: Evening shift position. Hours typically 3pm - 11:30pm. Rotating weekends - every 4th weekend. Rotating Holidays.
