General Overview

The Senior Histology Specialist reports to the Dermatopathology Laboratory Supervisor of Histology. Performs all duties relating to the processing of Dermatopathology. Assists Lab Supervisor in training of other Histotechnologists, and maintains quality control standards for the laboratory. Able to assume daily operations as necessary.

Work Location and Hours

The first six (6) to nine (9) months the position will be working in the Mass General Hospital Histology Laboratory during the second and third shift (7PM 3:30AM) or (10PM to 6:30AM).When a new facility is complete, the position will be moving to a Mass General Physician Organization Facility in the Western Suburbs of Boston.

The hours at the new facility will be (12:00PM 8:30PM) or (3PM 11:30PM).

Responsibilities

Trains new technologists on proper procedures and techniques, evaluates new technology for clinical application and assists in updating procedure manuals for laboratory inspections and accreditations such JCAHO.

Receives blocks, helps account for all blocks received, helps with any problems associated with slides and blocks.

Makes sure the work is done in the assigned area, such as histology, special stains, neuropath, frozen sections and immunohistochemistry.

Reports any issues to the Supervisor.

Embed specimens ensuring proper orientation. Produces 4 micron sections using a microtome and appropriate knives; floats sections on a water bath; collects sections on a glass slide; dries in a slide dryer for a specified time.

Stains slides, with routine, special stains, and IHC according to approved procedures to enhance certain tissue elements required for diagnosis. Coverslips and labels stained slides. Examines slides with a microscope to ascertain that the results are satisfactory.

Ensures all blocks and slides are clerically correct. Assembles and collates slides. Distribute slides to residents and staff pathologists.

Determines when prescribed techniques and apparatus should be modified in order to meet required quality standards.

Performs enzyme histochemistry stains as required.

Able to program and utilize all laboratory equipment.

Maintains quality control logs and monitors daily completion of logs.

Maintains inventory

Responsible for quality control of all reagents.

Learn to use LIS system to perform daily lab operations and troubleshoot issues.

Preparation for and performance of immunohistochemical staining in the histology laboratory utilizing both manual and automated methodologies as required and directed by pathologists, residents and the Histology or IHC-SPU Supervisor.

Shares responsibility for preparation of solutions and reagents in accordance with approved procedures. Maintains quality control records. Keeps accurate records of blocks and slides produced. Files tissue blocks, ensuring each is properly labeled.

Will be required to rotate through the duties of an Immunohistochemistry Sr. Histology Technician.

Will be required to accession Dermatopathology specimens as necessary.

Various other duties as assigned such as special projects assigned by Dermatopathology Laboratory Supervisor.

Supervisory Responsibility:

None may assist in daily operations for Laboratory Supervisor as needed

Skills/Abilities/Competencies

Must be able to correctly and accurately embed all human tissue to include skin and or animal tissues. Must follow minimum national cutting standards of 50 blocks per hour embedding and 30 slides per hour cutting.



Must be able cut artifact free two micrometer sections

Must be able to perform a high quality manual H&E stain

Must be able to competently perform all special and immunohistochemistry stains with minimum supervision using both manual and automated methodologies
