The Director of Property Underwriting plays a key role in the development, management and communication of underwriting appetite, policies, guidelines, coverage, and forms for a line of business (or multiple lines of business in the product strategy unit) and uses expert understanding of competitor product offerings and data-driven insights to bring greater focus to product line and create plans to win in the marketplace.
Responsibilities: * Designs, tests and implements appetites that clearly define boundaries of risk taking for Distribution, Underwriting, and Brokers/Agents based on organizational risk tolerance, desired portfolio mix, financial results, and competency * Reviews underwriting guidelines and practices to make certain that they keep pace with a rapidly changing environment * Works with Compliance & Controls on filing issues * Reviews and approves filings as necessary * Monitors execution against appetite and refine as needed to diversify book and effectively address growth and profit challenges * Works with Risk Engineering to ensure that Underwriting guidelines are consistent with engineering policies and procedures to support underwriting risk selection. * Develops and maintains deep understanding of competitors' products, coverage's, and appetite * Transforms competitor intelligence into relevant, accurate and usable strategic knowledge to create strategies and new product development opportunities * Collaborates with Product Intelligence on comprehensive analyses to better understand the book's performance and to modify strategy as needed * Collaborates with Distribution, Underwriting, Claims, Reinsurance and other Product Management units to engage in appetite discussions and establish action plan to improve performance
Qualifications: * Advanced knowledge of competitive environment, coverage, legal, regulatory environment, insurance operations, property underwriting and industry trends: knowledge of actuarial and insurance concepts * Ability to influence others and effectively manage projects and working groups * Strong analytical skills with an ability to identify trends and develop appropriate solutions * Strong technical knowledge of risk engineering concepts and how they influence account performance and risk selection * Ability to effectively communicate (verbally, writing, presentations), plan and organize work, work effectively and collaborate with others, apply financial and business acumen and execute well * Education as normally acquired through a Bachelor's degree, or equivalent training * At least 7 years of property underwriting experience * Professional designations (e.g. CPCU/ARM, etc.) preferred Benefits:
