The Chief Investment Officer will assume responsibility for performance of all Mercer discretionary investment solutions excluding alternative assets, in the United States and Canada and to lead and oversee the portfolio management team in the US and Canada. They must effectively manage all discretionary investment portfolios on an ongoing basis and ensure that appropriate risk management / compliance is followed. Additionally, they must contribute to product development initiatives for the region and thought leadership more generally. They also need to support client service and sales activities, contribute to the broader success of the discretionary investment business and any other initiatives, as an effective member of the senior management team and they must build effective and collaborative working relationships with colleagues across the Investments Pillar. To fulfill this role, the Chief Investment Officer will:

* Generate investment performance in line with expectations for discretionary investment solutions in the United States and Canada, in each of the categories referred to above. This includes performance at the Mercer fund level, solution level (collection of funds to achieve a stated objective) and client portfolio level
* Take proactive measures to address strategies where expectations are not being met over appropriate periods of time
* Lead and oversee the portfolio management team focused on all assets excluding alternatives in the US and Canada including mentoring, hiring and retaining senior members of the team
* Chair the Americas Investment Committee and jointly chair the Mercer Discretionary Governance Committees in the US and Canada (for implemented consulting clients)
* Work closely and collaboratively with colleagues in other parts of the investment business and more broadly throughout Mercer
* Ensure all discretionary investment solutions excluding alternatives are managed appropriately on an ongoing basis to ensure the portfolios achieve their objectives including selection of fund managers, management of these relationships and portfolio construction, and asset allocation (where relevant)
* In conjunction with the Global CIO, Mainstream Assets, lead the development of, and changes or refinements to the investment process in the areas of manager selection, portfolio construction and risk management
* Maintain a current knowledge of domestic and international economic trends and investment vehicles in order to proactively identify and evaluate investment opportunities
* Drive collaboration between the portfolio management team and the Mercer manager research team to research and select high conviction managers for addition to Mercer's discretionary solutions
* Design appropriate portfolio construction guidelines for underlying fund managers utilized
* Work closely with the Operations Team to ensure all portfolios are implemented efficiently on an ongoing basis, including regular contact with the appointed managers to monitor performance and resolve any issues arising
* Ensure compliance with Mercer's standards at all levels within the investment function
* Make a key contribution to all new strategy development initiatives, including the development of the product roadmap and the coordination of activities leading to new strategy creation
* Help drive the 'shape' of the implemented consulting service going forward to ensure consistency of client portfolios with Mercer 'best ideas and policies'
* Contribute to the ongoing development of the Mercer's intellectual capital in various investment areas
* Represent the portfolio management team with the US Mutual Fund Board and with the Mercer Trust Company Board. This involves leading the presentation of any recommendation that requires Board approval and resolving any issue to ensure a constructive relationship with the Boards
* Support relevant client service and sales activities, including relationships with tender consultants, as required. Ensure the portfolio management team more broadly also contributes successfully to this goal
* Participate in any relevant portfolio management global initiatives, including being a contributing member of the Mainstream Assets Global Investment Committee
* Support the CIO Group and solutions business management in any other aspect as required
* Be proactive in all aspects of the job, and remain attentive to any potential weakness that could lead to errors or mistakes. Attempt to address any such situation early

* Actuarial designation - ASA or higher; CFA preferred but not required
* 10 years experience in pensions consulting or investment area
* Deep technical knowledge related to DB asset strategy setting
* Significant experience with client interaction at a senior level
* Proven sales record
