Companies For Working Moms

Working moms work hard. I can remember thinking of my mom as a hero (still do actually). She worked the normal eight-hour shift, five-days a week, but also cooked, cleaned and looked after six kids and a husband.

My mom even had energy left to remember our important days: birthdays, Christmas, Thanksgiving...and celebrate them all. My dad was...my dad and I love him. He did his part too but I definitely preferred for my mom to do my hair, iron my clothes, and pack my lunch. She just did it "better".

Some out there think it unfair to give women priority at work because of non-work related comittments. I think it unfair not to as it seems only they can do them. Mothers shouldn't have to be punished because they are moms. We all want to believe in equality and how times have changed but they haven't changed completely. Women still don't get paid as much as men and the truth is they have more responsibility.

It makes sense, then, for women to seek out companies that understand these non-work related comittments and try to accomodate them. Provide them with the tools so they can accomplish both their workplace and personal duties without sacrificing either. Working Mother magazine has made a list of 90 such companies that have on-site child-care or telecommuting options to help moms out.

The top 10 list is as follows:

1) Bank of America

2) Deloitte

3) Discovery Communications

4) Ernst & Young

5) General Mills

6) IBM Corp.

7) PricewaterhouseCoopers

8) University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics

9) WellStar Health Systems

10) KPMG LLP
